I can't even really recall the title of the story, but I read it in the 6th grade in English class and it was the story of a girl living with her family in a an old house with a creepy reputation. Late at night, she hears weird noises, like someone walking around the house, but she never sees anything when she goes snooping. Her family assures her that she's imagining things and that old houses make noises all the time, but she's not convinced. Then she discovers a secret door, and that the walls of the house are riddled with secret rooms passages, which ultimately culminates in her being captured, bound and gagged by this escaped convict who had been hiding out inside the walls. I must have read the part of her being held prisoner about a thousand times.
